Advocacy

Recent Advocacy work undertaken by the Advocacy Committee

The 2024/25 Advocacy Committee, chaired by Aidan McLaren-Caux, is actively following up issues identified by the membership as the highest priority. Requests for meetings with the Minister of Health (Healthcare Access and Priorities), Minister of Finance (Local Government Finance Reform) and Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs (Respectful Conduct in Governance) have been sent with the hope of meeting together with the Minister of State for Local Government and Rural Communities prior to the summer break.

AKBLG at UBCM  – 2024

The 2024 UBCM Convention in Vancouver was an opportunity for AKBLG Board Members to advocate on behalf of the AKBLG membership to senior levels of governments. It was also an opportunity to connect once again with all the membership through the AKBLG Luncheon. During UBCM, representatives of the AKBLG Board met with:

  • Minister of Health (Reasonable Access to Insured Health Care)
  • Minister of Mental Health and Addictions (Increased Mental Health Support for local
    government)
  • Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness (Funding Model for
    Emergency Management Responsibilities)
  • Municipal Affairs – staff (Responsible Conduct of Elected Officials)
  • Local Government Finance (Funding Models)

Other Advocacy Activity

AKBLG is supporting the Association of Vancouver Island and Coastal Communities (AVICC) in their LEGISLATIVE REFORM initiative through funding assistance and participation on the planning committee.

Columbia River Treaty

Columbia River Treaty – Local Government Committee (CRT-LGC)

In 2011, local governments across the Columbia Basin came together to help Basin residents and local governments engage in decisions around the future of the Columbia River Treaty.

 

With the support of the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), the four regional districts in the region joined with the Village of Valemount and the Association of Kootenay Boundary Local

 

Governments (AKBLG) to create the Columbia River Treaty Local Governments Committee

AKBLG is one of five Area Associations of Local Government within BC. The other four Associations include:
