About AKBLG

Structure, Purpose & Mandate

The Association of Kootenay Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) was established in November of 1933. It is one of five area associations within the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM).

As a non-profit, non-partisan association, the AKBLG is a coalition of cities, municipalities, regional districts, townships and villages in south eastern British Columbia. The Association represents over 175 elected officials in 30 local governments.

On a day-to-day basis, we advocate on the members’ behalf working to move resolutions forward, address emerging and shared issues in our communities. Board members meet with representatives in senior governments to discuss issues that have been identified as priority by our members.

Each year, AKBLG holds an Annual Convention in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting. Resolutions are debated at the AGM and form the basis of our work. AKBLG also strives to host educational sessions when there are emerging issues.

AKBLG is integrally involved with the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) and represented on the UBCM executive with the AKBLG President sitting on the UBCM Board of Directors. Once resolutions relating to provincial wide matters are endorsed at the AKBLG AGM, they are forwarded to UBCM for discussion and debate at the provincial level.
